Amelia, Senior at Mizzou, Anthropology & Art History majors, Italian minor
Internship at artisan ceramics studio in Trappitello, Sicily, Italy
Student Statement: “Overall making art is not a direct connection to my major, it is extremely involved in what I study. Learning the process, versus completing it (a work of art), are two different things entirely. I plan on using what I learned to study more ceramics in the future, but also to help me get into more schooling due to it being international as well as a more unique internship experience rather than the typical summer job for college students. I am so thankful for everything I have learned.”

This experience broadened my cultural perspective, enhanced my communication abilities, all while teaching me about work abroad and the systems of other nations.”

Jozlynn, Junior at Mizzou
Psychology major, Italian and Criminology minors
Internship at clinical pediatric psychologist, Taormina, Sicily, Italy
Student statement: “I didn’t know that I wanted to go into kids’ psychology until I got here (at the internship). I think pediatric psychology is very important because it determines the rest of their (the children’s) lives...Take as much as you can out of the internship because you learn so much!”

Cecilia, Junior at Mizzou

Internship at Addiopizzo, anti-crime and anti-mafia organization, Catania, Sicily, Italy

Grace, Senior at Mizzou
Communication major, Human Resource Management and Italian minors
Internship at Residence Terra Rossa (hotel) in Taormina, Sicily, Italy
Student statement: “Working here (in Sicily) has taught me so much about the world and about different cultures. I’ve encountered many different people from all over the world: English, French, Italian, German, Polish, Spanish, Aussies, people from New Zealand!...Working in hospitality in Italy has been so incredibly impactful to my life and to my future career. I’ve found that I really enjoy the hospitality industry. I’ve learned how to be adaptable and go out of my comfort zone. I have found new confidence in myself and in my abilities...I would recommend this experience to anyone interested in the industry.”

Sofia, Senior at Mizzou
Anthropology major, minors in Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Archaeology, and Italian
Internship at archaeological park and museum, Parco Archeologico di Naxos e Taormina, in Giardini-Naxos, Sicily, Italy
Student statement: “I really wanted to practice and improve my speaking Italian...and technical knowledge. I think by the end of my internship my conversation skills have improved immensely. I was able to do my whole day in Italian; converse with my coworkers, translate for them with tourists, assist tourists in both Italian and English. It required a lot of new vocabulary and a lot of faith in my own conversation skills I did not have before. I also just really wanted to learn more about my field, and I learned so much. I had the opportunity to speak to so many different archaeologists, museum researchers, and other people who contribute to the creation of a museum. I also got a lot of great experience working with museum inventory and cataloguing processes which was a really valuable insight into the way artifacts are catalogued on a local, national, and global scale. It was so fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes work, not only cataloguing but the cleaning, organizing, and maintenance that went along with preparing the museum for tourists and scholars alike every single day. After this internship I feel more prepared than ever to take the next steps for my future career and I feel confident in applying to my master's program with actual experience under my belt...Truly my internship was beyond incredible for me, I cannot think of a single way I could have made this summer more beneficial for me academically and career wise.”
