The School of Languages and Literatures and Cultures mourns the passing, and celebrates the citizenship, teaching, and scholarship of Professor Wang Sik Kim. Professor Emeritus of Ewha Women’s University, Dr. Kim served for years as Adjunct Professor of Korean Politics at the University of Missouri, teaching widely attended courses on Korean politics, history, and culture. His contributions on campus were matched by his deep commitment to community engagement, which saw him serve as Director of the National Museum of Korean History from 2012 to 2015, and take on major roles in national governmental bodies including the Ministry of Unification and the National Human Rights Commission of the Republic of Korea.
It is rare to find someone as knowledgeable in so many fields as Professor Wang Sik Kim. He was a highly skilled political science professor with a deep understanding of the Korean culture and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to promoting it globally. His thoughtfulness was apparent outside of the classroom as he supported his colleagues and students, offering encouragement for their future and never hesitating to share his wisdom and advice. His passion for everything was unmatched, and he selflessly served and left a great impact on not only Mizzou but also the greater, global community. The suddenness of his passing fills us with sadness, and we will miss him deeply.
